A Pastel is an art medium consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder of a neutral hue and low saturation. Pastels have been used by artists since Renaissance, but gained popularity mostly in the 18th century, when a number of notable artists made pastel their primary medium. An artwork created in pastel is called a pastel drawing or a pastel painting.
